CDA is pleased to present <The Blue Flower>, a solo exhibition by Jeongwoong Lee running from August 30 to September 28, 2024. This exhibition serves as a continuation of the artist’s 2022 solo exhibition, <Notwithstanding>. The key themes of this exhibition are wounds, wandering, and drifting. The artworks are set against an imagined landscape ravaged by disaster, where natural elements like stones, trees, and water coexist with human figures and various disordered, artificial elements, including architectural structures. These elements symbolize specific objects, situations, ideologies, and emotions, while also functioning as part of an organic composition aimed at achieving formal beauty and completeness in the paintings. As his work begins and ends with an ‘image’ that resists concrete verbal explanation, viewers are encouraged to engage with the artworks starting from the visual imagery presented on the canvas.

The exhibition's theme draws inspiration from the work of Novalis, one of the leading figures of German Romantic literature. Specifically, it references Novalis’s unfinished novel 『Heinrich von Ofterdingen (1802)』, known in Korea by the title The Blue Flower. In this novel, the ‘Blue Flower’ symbolizes ideal love, the search for the soul, and a yearning for the unknown. The flower appears in a dream to the protagonist, Heinrich, leaving a profound impression on him. Driven by this vision, Heinrich embarks on a journey to find the Blue Flower, a quest that symbolizes his inner journey toward self-discovery and spiritual enlightenment. Through the symbol of the Blue Flower, Novalis sought to express the ideals pursued by humanity—perfect beauty, love, truth, and mystery. This symbol encapsulates the core elements of Romanticism, illustrating the conflict between reality and ideals, and the Romantic spirit’s pursuit of harmony and integration within that conflict.

The symbolism of the ‘Blue Flower’ in Novalis’s novel is mirrored in this exhibition. The artist likens the concepts and processes in his work to the pursuit of an unattainable ideal, much like the quest for the Blue Flower. He suggests that objective knowledge, morality, and values are merely virtual realities, and that one should instead strive towards an idealized spiritual existence based on individual will and passion. This notion connects the fantasy worlds depicted in his artwork with the Romanticist philosophy that emphasizes a journey towards an ideal, spiritual being. This connection hints at the underlying influence of 19th-century Romantic art philosophy in his work. Specifically, it reflects the impact of artists like Lawrence Alma-Tadema, a Dutch-born British painter active during the Victorian era, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, an artist group active in mid-19th century Britain. Despite their different backgrounds and philosophies, both movements emphasized meticulous representation and a realist approach while pursuing a romanticized and idealized aesthetic, aspects that resonate with Lee’s artwork.

In both the novel and the exhibition, the ‘Blue Flower’ does not exist in reality. However, we do not deny its existence; rather, we live in partial reliance on it. This idea is tied to human nature, regardless of one’s philosophical tendencies or viewpoints. The artist hopes that this exhibition will prompt viewers to recall their own ‘Blue Flower,’ making it a reflective experience and a moment to revisit their own ideals.

“I wanted to believe it was a UFO.”

“Somewhere in the blue night turning into dawn, I woke up to an unfamiliar sight and there was no one around. The sound of insects in the grass and the occasional dog barking wakes up the silence. In fact, I had been hearing it for a long time, but it must have been far behind my awareness...

Here, there is a raw octopus. No, it might not be an octopus. The heavy breathing shows that death is imminent. The creatures on the artist's table may not be from Earth. It was placed together with the fragments found at the site of his fall and decorated. After a while, his last communication failed. A striped afterimage was created due to binary signals. By the time the afterimage disappeared, the creature had become an object.

During a long period of silence, I sketched its appearance on the canvas. “It seemed as if the candle’s flame was agitated by the stroke of a stiff brush.”
